How Beginners Choose Drumsticks Part 1
Dec 20, 2018

Every beginner will be confused when purchasing drums. When the drum sticks, models, materials, and weights, the shape of the skull will affect the feel of a pair of drum sticks. Hit the tone. Casually choosing a good-looking drum stick often makes you suffer from pains during practice, wrist pain, and a lot of blisters on the palm, which not only lowers the efficiency of the exercise, but also consumes interest. Therefore, it is especially important to buy a drum stick that suits you.

Read this article carefully and you will know what kind of drum stick is right for you.

Material articles

There are three main types of drum sticks: Hickory, Maple, and Quercus.

Below we introduce the characteristics of these three kinds of wood after they are made into drum sticks:

Walnut is the most used wood for drum stick making. The hardness of walnut is medium to slightly hard, the fiber structure is fine and uniform, and has strong toughness, especially in the aspects of anti-vibration and anti-wear, and has certain resistance to bending and corrosion. In general, walnut has moderate hardness and density, is not easily damaged, and has strong durability.

The hardness and density of maple are the smallest of the three materials, and the reaction force is small. The drum stick made of maple is very suitable for practice. Maple is easily worn by the cymbals and is not durable enough, but the use of Maple drums on the drum pads does not affect the durability of the maple. Maple is the favorite drum material for Xiaobian.

The highest density and highest hardness of the three materials, the high conductivity. The oak is heavy, hard, straight in texture, thick in structure, light in color, beautiful in texture, relatively high in mechanical strength, resistant to abrasion, and wood is not easy to dry, saw and cut.

In addition to wooden drum sticks, there are drum sticks of other materials, drum sticks made of metal or fiberglass, which can be used as a novice to understand them, but you don't have to use this type of sticks from the beginning.

The following text section has a small editorial tendency.

Under normal conditions: oak density > hickory density > maple density.

Wood density determines the material basis of wood strength and stiffness, and maple is the least rigid material among the three types of wood. When hitting, the elastic deformation is large, the conductivity to the impact ability is lower, and the shock absorption is stronger. Therefore, when playing with maple, the same force is hit, and our wrist is subjected to the least reaction. This is why Xiaobian uses Maple wood regardless of what he is playing.

But the plastic deformation of maple is the most serious, the loss is faster, and often the price is not cheap, but the drum pad is not so easy to break. So come to the conclusion, I suggest you use the sticks of walnut or maple.

There is a view that the heavier the novice drum stick is, the more convenient it is to open the wrist. We think it is wrong. The heavier weight means the density is high, or it is a thick drum stick. The drum stick is too thick and heavy during use. It is not guaranteed to have a correct attitude of holding the drum stick. In order not to let the drum stick fall, the beginner needs to forcefully hold the drum stick, which is not conducive to quickly learn to hit the wrist with a force.
